Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas

NITROUS OXIDE – N2O

Nitrous oxide (N2O), commonly known as laughing gas, is a colorless non-flammable gas with a slight metallic scent. Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas that has almost 300 times higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide.

Nitrous oxide is naturally present in the atmosphere and a part of the nitrogen cycle of the Earth. The natural emissions of nitrous oxide occur mostly due to bacteria breaking down nitrogen in soils and the oceans and is removed from the atmosphere by certain types of bacteria, UV radiation or chemical reactions.

The atmospheric levels of nitrous oxide have risen for the past 100 years and nowadays it occurs at 333 ppb concentration in the atmosphere (in 2020). The human made nitrous oxide emissions come mainly from agricultural soil management, the other main sources being fuel combustion, wastewater treatment and chemicals production.
